These wild dogs resemble a German shepherd. It is a pack-living animal, which has a similar role in nature to that of the wolf. In appearance, it is a long-legged animal about the size of an Alsatian dog. Tan, black and white make up the color pattern of their coat.

This is a rare wild dog, once numbering in the hundreds of thousands. There are fewer than 5,000 wild dogs existing in the wild nowadays. The population of these dogs reduced during the early part of the century. It was a sad result of an extermination campaign that was led by ranchers. Nowadays, domestic dogs spread diseases that affect the population of these dogs greatly. The african wild dog is not a common pet that you will find in a kennel or in rescues.
