The American Pit Bull Terrier is a descendent of the original English bull-baiting Bulldog. Bull and Terrier dogs came to the US in the early 1800’s as all-around farm dogs and frontier guardians. This breed was bred historically with working and performance objectives in mind. Recently, weight pulls have grown in popularity with American Pit Bull fanciers. This keeps that spirit of competition among the breed alive, but avoids the violence of pit fighting.
