This small hound was developed to hunt the rabbit and hare. Their miniature size and tracking ability allowed hunters to follow them on foot, so that women could easily participate in hunting. The peak of the breed’s popularity was in the 14th and 15th centuries when these canines were favored by British nobility. The breed probably owes its ancestry to the Foxhound, the small bloodhound, and the Harrier; its exact origin is uncertain.
