The original function of the breed is hunting small game by scent. The typical game for the breed is rabbits, hares, quail and pheasants. These small hounds were very popular among British nobility in the 14th-15th centuries. These dogs don’t run fast following the game, but can find it by a cold track, which allows the hunters to follow the pack on foot. White spots on the tail and melodious voice allow hunters not to lose the hound in the field. These hounds usually hunt in packs; they are intelligent, independent, and inquisitive.

The ancestry of this breed is lost in time. Many breed enthusiasts hold different ideas about the breed’s origin. Most agree that this is probably one of the oldest Hounds. Packs of these dogs may have existed across Britain before Roman times. The dogs of this breed owe their ancestry to the Foxhound, the Harrier and a small bloodhound. At first, these dogs came in a variety of sizes and coat types – including the modern, smooth hound coat. There was even a pocket animal of this breed.
