Nowadays, there are two size varieties of the breed: under 13 inches and under 16 inches at the withers, but in the 13th and 14th centuries, so-called glove hounds were very popular. British royalty and nobility kept packs of small hounds for hunting hare, rabbits and quail. Unlike larger hounds, these little creatures could not run fast, but could find the game by a cold trail. It made the process of hunting more exciting, because hunters could follow the dogs on foot.

The breed tends to live for about 12-15 years on the average and does not need a lot of care. These dogs are prone to such disorders as heart and back problems, and dwarfism. They have to be exercised daily and brushed regularly. The breed stands about 13-16 inches at the shoulder and weighs from 20 to 25 pounds. The dogs come in tri-color and have a short coat that lies closely to the body. The coat of these dogs is rather easy to groom. They are intelligent and have a good sense of smell.
