The Beauceron is a rare French dog that is almost unknown outside of France. They were derived as hunting dogs for wild boar. The Beauceron is still used on farms in France to herd sheep and cattle. They are the most preferred dog in France for herding and are said to have been palace dogs at one time. There is an ancient painting showing two Beaucerons guarding the throne of a French king.
