These seemingly intimidating but in fact kind-hearted creatures were bred in Germany in the beginning of the 20th century, and the breed received official recognition in 1933. These dogs were widely used in military and police work, because they were and are very well-set and enduring. These dogs are medium-sized, males averaging 22-25 inches tall at the withers, and females standing 21-24 inches tall. They have smooth coat, which occurs in light tan, fawn or red, and sometimes in brindle. The lower jaw is turned up in a characteristic Mastiff-like manner.
