The dog was used as an eliminator of these pests as it was rather small, strong and fearless too. It was small enough to get in the cracks and crevices of the stones to rid them of rodent pests. Today this breed is a popular and well-loved family pet.

This breed of the dogs is an old one and it was developed centuries ago in the Scottish highlands. The breed was named after piles of stones the Scottish used as landmarks and memorials that were called "cairns". There were holes in thoses stones where the pests lived. The cairn minnesota terrier club will support any breeder that follows their breeding guidelines to promote the betterment of the dog.
