This breed originated in the United States. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is known for their incredible ability to retrieve downed fowl from rough and icy waters. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever was the first individual retriever breed recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1878. This breed is very protective and loyal to its family. However, they can be stubborn and strong-willed and is not the best dog for most novice owners.
