The breed is characterized by a short muzzle with large luminous eyes and erect ears. The neck is slightly arching and sloping into lean shoulders; the tail is moderately long and carried up. The coat may be either long or smooth. Coat color is variable. The front legs are placed widely apart at the sides of a deep and broad chest, and the hind legs are also well apart and with well let down hocks. The toes on both hind- and front legs should be well separated but not spread.

These dogs are bred to be lap companions and require lots of attention. The ideal weight is 4-6 pounds, although dogs of 3 and over 9 pounds may happen. This is the only natural toy breed and is the smallest one in the world. Its ancestors lived in the times of ancient Toltecs and Aztecs who considered them to be sacred animals. They are believed to have originated in the same-name state of Mexico, but also might have been introduced by the Chinese. The breed received world wide popularity in the 19th century.
