These dogs are famous for their saucy and self-assured temperament. They are not very affable and can be very dog-aggressive. However, they love their owners and are very protective around them. They enjoy company and interaction and are not intended for solitary life. They make excellent companions for elderly people and can be superb therapy dogs. They are very fragile and require careful handling. This breed is not intended for hard work and is purely a domestic breed.

These dogs are the only natural toy breed and the smallest breed in the world. They come in two varieties of coat type and can be smooth-coated and long-coated. Any color and pattern is acceptable in this breed, but solid colors are preferable. According to the AKC standard, these dogs vary in size from 2 to 6 pounds, although bigger and smaller dogs may occur sometimes. This breed is characterized by a well-rounded, “apple-dome” skull and tiny muzzle. The eyes and ears are very large.
