In general, this is a very healthy and long-lived breed. These dogs live 15-17 years, and purebred species rarely suffer from genetic illnesses. This breed is the smallest in the world; the dogs may weigh 1-2 pounds. There is a misconception that these dogs can be teacup or pocket-size and some breeders sell small puppies at large prices. But according to the AKC standard, there is no such a type within the breed. Actually, very small puppies can be born sometimes in the same litter with “normal” littermates; they are premature and have a little chance to survive. Very rarely true dwarfs occur.
