These are very friendly dogs and are also good dogs to travel with. They are best with older, considerate children and are moderately protective. These little dogs like to bark and are compulsive diggers therefore they can dig under the fence easily.

The animals are rather devoted to their families; some fanciers say that the longhaired variety is calmer than the other two types. The wire-haired variety is more outgoing and clown-like.
