Originating in England, this breed descended from the Mastiff breeds selectively bred to overcome a bull or hold its own in the pit. When bull baiting was prohibited by the law, breed fanciers started to preserve, promote and protect the breed as a valued family pet. It was one of the first breeds to be granted official recognition when The English Kennel Club was organized in 1873. This breed is a symbol of tenacity and has become a popular mascot demonstrating the toughness of the team. Its initial purpose was bull baiting and fighting bears, monkeys, and badgers. The peculiar features of the breed are: high pain threshold, powerful jaws, and low gravity center. British bulldog puppies are very popular and can be viewed in a photo.
