Originally, dogs of this breed were raised to guard, control and bait bulls. The baiting of bulls was based on the belief that if a bull was to be slaughtered, it should first be baited. After it, the meat was believed to become more tender and nutritious. Bull baiting was also considered a kind of sport. This “sport” was very popular among noblemen and royalty in the middle ages. It was a cruel show full of aggression and blood. In 1835, the Parliament banned bull baiting and the breed’s popularity diminished. However, the breed was lucky enough to have won lots of fans by that time who improved the dog's personality preserving its physical qualities though.
