The ancestors of the breed are Asiatic mastiffs, but it was developed in Great Britain. These dogs were used to attack bulls in arena combat up to the 19th century. Adult dogs are not very active and it’s better to keep them indoors. These dogs are of gentlest temperament with the master, but are very brave as guardians. This breed tends to dominate and display strong leadership, so it requires socializing at early age. The major health problems are: difficulty with breathing, poor eyesight, and sensitiveness to cold climate.

Dogs of this breed are small in stature but wide and compact with thick, massive heads. The coat comes in many colors, such as red, fawn, brindle, pale yellow or washed-out red, or white. Any combination of these colors also exists. Black color of the coat is undesirable in the show ring but not a disqualification and is recognized by the AKC. Their eyes are very round and very dark. These dogs need little exercise or grooming. However, their face demands regular attention. It is necessary to wipe daily in the face folds with a damp cloth. Dogs of this breed are average shedders.
