The German Shepherd is well known for its work as a police dog, search and rescue dog and as a guide dog. The breed has tremendous courage and loyalty, is highly intelligent and easily trained. It is believed that they date back to as early as the 7th century. German fancier Rittmeister von Stephanitz was instrumental in developing the German Shepherd using long-haired, short-haired, wire-haired shepherds and the mountain sheepdog of Germany.
