According to the breed standard, the height of purebred males should vary from 24 to 26 inches at the withers; females should stand from 22 to 24 inches. These dogs are deep-bodied, with smooth outlines, massive shoulders and withers, and large head. The neck of these dogs is long enough to provide a typical carriage of the head forward and a little higher than the top of the shoulders. To provide for free and quick movement, these dogs have a capacious chest and massive legs. The forequarters are a little longer than hindquarters. Though these are very intelligent dogs, they need regular training and constant attention. Training should begin early in life that is very important as untrained dogs have a tendency to be difficult to handle and control. Since these are very intelligent and eager to learn dogs, they can be trained to do a variety of tasks. They can perform well in sentry duty, police work, and tracking, obedience, search and rescue, and serve as assistance dogs for the disabled.
