There are several breed varieties that differ in conformation and personality. The old breed standard is still preserved in the former East Germany. Those dogs are large, with a straight back and dense coat of a very dark color. Such dogs are still used for their original purpose herding sheep; they are very hardy and endurable. Enthusiasts make attempts to preserve this variety and strive for official recognition. These dogs are not very popular, because they are rather difficult to train and suited mostly for herding. German shepherd care information will include pictures, health care and training tips for the dog.
