The original purpose of these dogs is herding sheep. The appearance of the breed was dictated by the cold weather, predators that the dogs had to fight, and other tasks they had to perform. The early dogs of this breed varied in the body build and coat type, but all of them were very intelligent and able to do specialized work. The standardization of the breed started in 1889. The popularity of the breed grew immensely because of its intelligence, endurance, agility, strength and courage.
