The main aim of the breed was to participate in hunting on land and water and retrieve small game. The breed originated from a series of planned mating carried out by Lord Tweedmouth from 1864. The ancestors of this breed are Tweed Water Spaniel, Irish setter, and other hunting dogs. These dogs are known for their endurance and hard work; they are able to swim in cold water and can detect game easily. The peculiar feature of the breed is its long, dense, lustrous double coat. These hounds are extremely active and like to be with people.

A pet of this breed should have a job to do to burn off its excessive energy. This breed makes excellent hunters, but only a few owners of these hounds go hunting. Swimming is ideal activity for this breed in summer. It’s excellent exercise both for adults and puppies. Swimming is also a good chance to play fetch and socialize a pet with other people. It’s not recommended to exercise these hounds in the heat of the day, because of their dense coat. If the weather is hot, a dog should have access to shade, free moving air, and water.
