The dogs of this breed are very successful in top class competitions in Obedience, Agility and Conformation. The dogs should be trained regularly with an experienced trainer and proper equipment. The temperament of these dogs is friendly, loyal and confident. These dogs produce a general appearance of balanced, symmetrical, active, sound and powerful animals. Their jaws and neck are strong enough to carry game for long distances. The legs are straight, strong and muscular, the gait is powerful, with a good drive.

The GRCA, RGCC and other breed clubs promote breed education and encourage responsible breeding and ownership. The GRCA is one of the oldest and largest breed clubs in the US with over 5,000 members. Kennel registry by the GRCA was started in 1989. When a perspective buyer asks for breeder references in the area, it’s possible to find all registered kennels that work with this breed. Basic tests for a dog's hunting ability were developed by this club. There are also several hunting clubs in the USA working with this breed. They preserve the original purpose of the breed.
