Red is an unacceptable color in this breed; mahogany dogs are accepted as “redheads” only in the English variety. This breed is easy to recognize by the dense and waterproof coat, which may be straight or moderately wavy. The coat should be rich and lustrous, according to the AKC breed standard. Pure white, extremely light and dark coats are not accepted in the breed. American and English varieties vary slightly in color, with American type being much darker. Senior dogs can become darker or lighter; they usually have a noticeable whitening of fur around the face. Like other dogs, golden retriever puppy should be fed on foods specially produced for puppies.
