There are no absolutely healthy breeds, as the gene pool of any breed has recessive genes which may cause different health disorders in the offspring. This breed is prone to eye disorders, such as Central Progressive Retinal Atrophy (CPRA) and hereditary cataracts. To make sure that a dog is free from eye disorders, ask the breeder for a CERF certificate. Some bloodlines of the breed are succeptible to Subvalvular Aortic Stenosis (SAS,) epilepsy, hypothyroidism, skin allergies and other disorders. Like all large dogs, this breed tends to develop hip or elbow dysplasia, which means poor development of the hip or elbow joint.

The major aim of this club is to promote the development and enjoyment of the breed. The membership is composed of owners, breeders, exhibitors and breed fanciers, which are interested in preserving the breed standard and increasing their knowledge on these dogs. The organization also provides veterinary care, evaluation and foster homes for the abandoned dogs. This activity relies on donations, memberships dues and fund-raising activities, run primarily by volunteers. To adopt a dog you have to prove that you are able to provide a loving home for it.
