As the name suggests, these dogs can be recognized by their coat color, which ranges from cream to dark mahogany. Although these dogs come in a variety of colors, they cannot be pure white, black or red. In America, brighter colors are preferred, while the British standard of perfection sticks to softer colors. Lighter colors are preferred by breeders of northern countries. As this breed was designed for accompanying hunters, the size of these dogs is ideal to fit to the boat. The standard height varies from 22 to 24 inches at the withers; males are slightly larger than females.

This breed is the most effective among the hunting dogs. It was developed in England in the 19th century by lord Tweedmouth to find and bring the prey both from the water and land. The AKC recognized the breed in 1932. Today, this dog breed is very versatile due to its excellent working qualities and friendly temperament. Besides hunting, these dogs are used in field trials, obedience and conformation. They make good guides for the blind and loving pets for active families.
