Pet quality puppies are sold at a lower price than the show prospect puppies. They may come from the same litter and have received the same care and attention, but they cannot be bred or shown because of minor conformation defects. Some show quality dogs are also sold with the agreement that the animal will be neutered. Reputable breeders consider the unwanted dogs’ overpopulation and don’t want to add to the problem. Spaying or neutering a dog doesn’t affect the animal’s disposition or temperament. Instead, it makes males more tolerant and helps females avoid serious health problems.

The hallmark of the breed is its coat that is water-repellent and with good undercoat. The coat is neither silky nor coarse; it may be straight or wavy. On the back of the forelegs and on the underbody, there is moderate feathering. The coat color is rich and lustrous, varying from yellowish to red. The dogs of this breed are very active, symmetrical and powerful; they are neither clumsy nor long in the leg. Males should be 23-24 inches at the withers; females are 21.5-22.5 inches.
