According to the breed standard, set by the American Kennel Club, the dogs of this breed should have a coat color ranging from yellowish to reddish. The coat color is the hallmark of this breed. At some point of the breed’s evolution, it was crossed with many hunting breeds, such as Irish Setter, Bloodhounds, and Labradors that resulted in appearance of the blonde or light-gold dogs.

These dogs should not be kept outdoors, because they thrive on attention, interaction and communication and need human company. Fastidious housekeepers are not recommended to own pets of this breed, because they shed much and lose most of their coat twice a year. Though this breed is very versatile and strong, it’s not suited for guarding, but it makes good watchdogs. People who obtain a dog of this breed for guarding the house and personal protection will be disappointed, because these dogs are unable to distinguish between friends and intruders due to their natural friendliness and playfulness.
