It is believed that the Irish Setter was developed in the British Isles and Ireland during the 18th century. The Irish Setter was initially bred to hunt upland game birds. Today, the Irish Setter has two varieties. One is darker, larger with a heavier coat. This dog comes from the conformation bloodlines. The other descending from the field trial lines, which is smaller and lighter. Today they are used more as show dogs and companions.
