The breed originated in the 1700's in the mountainous regions of County Kerry from which its name is derived. This is a national dog of Ireland and is a symbol of Ireland. There were many changes with this breed; maybe the breed was developed from the Portuguese Water Dog, Spanish (or Russian) "Blue Dog", etc.
