The Pekingese is native to China and was held sacred during ancient times. The emperor would select four Pekingese that would accompany him. Two would announce his arrive with sharp, piercing barks, while the other two held the hem of his robe in their mouth. Theft or injury to a Pekingese was punishable by death! This dog arrived in the United States in 1898 and is a very popular breed today.
