The Bloodhound, St. Hubert's Hound, and Chien de Saint-Hubert are three names for this special dog breed. Trailers, trackers, and policemen attest to the dog's ability to track a person over many miles with a scent that's several hours or days old. Escapees, kidnapped victims, and missing persons owe their jail sentences or lives to the keen sense of smell and innate tracking characteristics of Bloodhounds. It's not bred to track animals; in contrast, human beings are its main fare. You'll know a bloodhound by its droopy, saggy ears and wrinkly face. Somber, serious, and elderly are the anthropomorphic characteristics we attribute to its natural facial expression. It weighs between 80 and 110 to 160 pounds. 110 are the average maximum weight. They're 23 to 27 inches in height at the withers. The Bloodhound has a coat that ranges from black, tan, liver, red, to deep cherry and brown. The coat has no hair. It's purely composed of fur. The dog's bone thickness and weight are remarkable, and it has more skeletal mass than almost any breed, proportionally. These dogs are level, balanced, sweet-tempered, kind, and affectionate. The dog is especially prone to GDV, or Gastric Dilatation Volvulus, and it's the leading cause of death. An ear, eye, and skin specialist or veterinarian should frequently inspect those places for signs of illness. They live just shy of 7 years, as a median number. The longest-lived Bloodhound from a recent countrywide study was 12 years. The leading cause of death was GDV. GDV is sometimes called bloat or torsion. Torsion is likened to the twisting sensation. Both of these are apt colloquial terms for the effects and symptoms. The second leading cause of death was cancer, and that killed under a third of the dogs during the study. In GDV, gas gets trapped in the stomach and causes nauseous twisting, pacing, and sleeplessness. Any kind of swelling in the abdomen could be immediately deadly. 24 hour veterinary clinics need to be within directional knowledge of Bloodhound owners. It's a pretty poor condition to die from. The Bloodhound derives itself from motley of other hounds in France and Belgium. The breed goes back about 1,000 years to Belgian monasteries. The thick folds of skin under the chin and the enveloping ears trap scents so that the wind cannot scatter or remove them. The dog's large nasal chambers pick up the tiniest particles. Most Bloodhounds are silent, solitary tracking animals unlike loud pack hounds. Ladybird, Huckleberry Hound, Pluto, Ol' Red, Shuffles, Trusty, Buddy, and Bruno are some famous Bloodhounds that have greatly increased their popularity. The dog's expression accounts for much of its popularity. They're often depicted as country bumpkins, like in the animated Disney movie, the Aristocats. There are several fictional Bloodhounds, especially in Disney programs.
