The Border Collie is a herding dog breed that's indisputably regarded as the brainiest dog. Its intelligence is remarkable. It hails from the countrysides of Great Britain, specifically England and Scotland, although it has concentrations in Ireland too. Like a lot of herding dogs, it needs attention, a job to work on, and many activities to expend its energy. Neurosis, hazardous behavior, and aggression can result from improper socialization, male dog competitiveness, and lack of jobs or activities. Ongoing attention and outdoor sports are a couple prerequisites to owning this breed. The dogs can be cautious, reserved, or even nippy around strangers. Unlike some herding dogs that have devolved to companion and show circuit types, the Border Collie is still a farm staple around the world. It even acts as a protective guardian and companion. It's a mid-sized dog that weights 30 to 45 pounds and has a height of 12 to 22 inches at the withers. The litter size approaches six, give or take a few, and the lifespan tops off at 15 years. The Border Collie has a black, tan, yellow, red, white, cream, or blue coat. Most often, the double-coat comes in a black and white look. White is generally the dominant color. Border Collies have varying levels of ear pertness or limpness. Sometimes, the ears are fully erect. The eyes can be deep brown, light amber, or a standard blue. Sometimes, one eye can be one of color, and the other will be a different color. It's always unusual to see this trait in dogs, but it's somewhat rare in the Border Collie. Superstitions are prevalent about the correspondence of coat color to function, but experts say that coat coloration and markings have nil to do with working dog traits. Fanciers advocate merit-based judgment for their working traits. For instance, some breeders do not like all-white coats on working dogs, and that is ludicrous. The dog's coat doesn't need much grooming because a weekly brushing will suffice. The Border Collie doesn't just need exercise. A whole block of tasks is required. Otherwise, agitation will fester, and the Border Collie will act willful and destructive. This dog can learn a couple hundred commands, and it's a dog for someone that wants to ascend to high pinnacles in dog sports. You can't know if a Border Collie is purebred without a confirmed certificate from the American Kennel Club or the American Sheepdog Society. Some crossbred dogs appear to look like Border Collies, but they're mongrels. One of the dog's parents might have been a slightly different breed, of course. This all-purpose stock dog excels on the obedience metrics in dog shows because it's a perfectionist. Border Collies are not hesitant to shepherd people - watch out!
