It is believed that crossing the Italian Pointer, the Foxhound, the Bloodhound, the Greyhound, the Newfoundland, the Setter, and the Bulldog gave way to the English Pointer. The name Pointer was given for the motionless stance the dog assumes once it has found game. The direction of the point tells the hunter where the game is hiding. Today, the Pointer is a companion and hunting dog.
