The development of the English Toy Terrier was a result of the sport of rat killing. The sport came about to control vermin during the times of poor sanitation. Rat killing contests were held in pits and dogs were scored on the number of rats they could kill in a given time. This little dog has never achieved broad popularity, but has throughout the times remained a true fancier's dog.
