The Giant Schnauzer, also called the Russian Bear Schnauzer, Munich Schnauzer, and Riesenschnauzer, is a hardy, large, rugged dog with whiskers, beard, and a powerful frame. It needs plenty of exercise, and it descended from a cross of the Bouvier des Flandres, Great Dane, and Standard Schnauzer. This is the largest variety of three Shnauzer types, including the Standard and Miniature versions. Its utility is relegated to the positions of guard dog, military dog, police dog, cattle herder, and cattle drover. Farmers were intolerant of the need for excessive food, however. Poor farmers and shepherds had trouble affording such a substantial allotment of food for the breed. Nonetheless, it's a powerful dog with an impressive look that you won't soon forget. It's coarse, wiry, stringy, and extremely dense double coat is either black or gray. The gray is more like a salt and pepper look. The breed weighs between 65 and 100 pounds, and it stands between 24 and 28 inches at the withers. The withers are the point where the shoulders meet the neck. The Giant Schnauzer is no snob on loyalty. Not only does it not snub you, it will follow you everywhere in some cases. They're used to hunting foxes, raccoons, mice, possums, squirrels, and all kinds of wild game. Giant Schnauzers can hike and walk for several miles a day, sometimes more than a dozen. In that case, they're extremely resilient to tiredness and will have as much endurance as you can throw at it - to a point. This dog is almost suited to marathons, if not for the monotony of the run. These dogs are great for active participants in nature. Swimming, biking, jogging, and catch are things this dog pines for. The Giant Schnauzer was bred in Bavaria and Wurttemberg in Germany. The cattle herders wanted a large herding dog. Unfortunately, this breed often dies from toe cancer. Its other illnesses include epilepsy, bloat, hip dysplasia, Chron's disease, and incontinence. It also has a high prevalence of autoimmune disorders. The Giant Schnauzer does best with a lot of room to roam. Lots of acreage will suit it well. Apartment life is a no-no. They can't get any rest without two vigorous exercise sessions per day. They were bred for high-intensity, high-energy herding, and they need to get their heart going at least twice a day. Expect the dog to have trouble sleeping and sitting still if it's not exercised. The Giant Schnauzer has a lifespan of about 12 to 15 years. Its outer wiry coat is easy to manage, but its dense undercoat needs brushing and combing to ensure that it stays free of mats, tangles, and knots. Giant Schnauzers need to be clipped at least 4 times per year.
