The Irish Red and White Setter's origins are unclear, but there is a reference to spaniels that were "mostly white with red patches" in the 14th century. In the past, the term "spaniel" was not used for a particular, but described dogs used for sport. In the 17th century, dogs similar to the Irish Red and White Setter appeared in paintings. Even though they were primarily bred for the field, today they make wonderful companions.
