The Irish Wolfhound is a gigantic dog with a name attributable to its original purpose of hunting wolves. This massive shaggy dog has been known to reach heights of 6 feet or more on its hind legs. Although it’s a hefty behemoth, it’s extremely gentled, congenial, and nice - especially with small children. The Cu is a direct ancestor that was bred for the purposes of warfare over 2,000 years ago by the Celts. The Irish, Scottish, and English adapted them for use on the farm and wolf pursuits. They've also been used to hunt wild pigs and game animals like Elk. The Irish Wolfhound seizes the neck and crushes the spine. In fact, boar and wolves are extinct animals in Ireland. They're fierce creatures indeed. The Romans were incredibly frightened and judged them on par with Lions.
The Irish Wolfhound is a stunning 28 to 35 inches high at the withers. Males are about 33 to 36 inches at the withers. Females, like all breeds, are a couple of inches less on each end of the height spectrum. It weighs 90 to 150 pounds, and that is large enough to take down almost any wild animal. You might mistake this dog for an immature mule. Its size is staggering. The Great Dane is the only dog that's larger. You might also mistake it for a basketball player because it can reach up to 6 or 7 feet high when it stands on its hind legs. He has a coarse, hairy coat and dense, bristly, furry eyebrows. Its coat can be gray, the dominant color, or wheaten, brindle, red, black, white, tan, fawn, or brown. The dog may look fully-grown at 6 months of age, but it doesn't fully age until 1 to 1 and half years have gone by. Brindle is a striped, streaky, or lined combination of colors that's usually predominately brown. This robust dog only lives 5 to 9 years, and most miniature toy dogs live 5 to 10 years longer. Size appears to be a lifespan detriment in most breeds.
The Irish Wolfhound was used for fighting other dogs and guarding livestock, families, and properties. They were bred around the turn of the first century for these aggressive, multi-purpose talents. After almost 2,000 years, the breed faced extinction. Restrictions that placed royalty as the only legal owners almost removed the breed from existence. Fortunately, it was crossed with other breeds to keep it alive. However, the breeding between itself and the Great Dane, Borzoi, and Deerhound caused it have brindle hair. It used to have a predominately gray coat.
The Irish Wolfhound was the official dog of Ireland until the British invaders came to call it their official dog. The adoption by British forces caused Irish nationalists to shy away from it. The Irish Wolfhound was also a beast of battle. It harassed and attacked warriors on chariots, horses, and other vehicular weapons. These great beasts, the Irish Wolfhounds, were used against knights in numerous battles, mostly in Europe.
