The Kooikerhondje has been in the Netherlands since the 17th century. It originated from an old Dutch breed. This breed was developed to assist duck hunters by acting as a decoy and using their feathery tails to entice them into a trap. Today, the dogs that are still utilized to catch ducks do so primarily for scientific purposes. The Kooikerhondje also makes a good watchdog and enjoys chasing mice, rats, and moles.
Also called Kooiker Dog.
