In Poland, European mastiffs having Asian origins, beget Polish Tatra Sheepdogs, an even-tempered and clever dog that is quiet, devoted, and attention seeking. Its harsh thick white coat is either straight or slightly wavy with a dense undercoat. Historically culled for livestock guarding, this breed approached extinction following WW II. Now it is used as personal and property guardians, military and police dogs, and carting dogs. A remarkably attentive and protective family dog, it's amiable with children.
Also called Owczarek Podhalanski.
