The Tibetan KyiApso is one of the rarest breeds in the world and as its name indicates, it originated in Tibet. In Tibetan, "kyi" means dog, and "apso" means bearded or hairy. Both bearded and smooth-faced varieties are born to bearded parents. The bearded variety is easily recognized by its bearded face, tufts of hair or even lavish hair fall over the eyes, and fully curled, plumed tail. Tibetans conventionally use this breed for guarding livestock and self-protection. This breed is extremely rare outside of Tibet.
