The Wirehaired Fox Terrier was bred for use in rougher terrain than the Smooth Fox Terrier. The Wirehaired Fox Terrier's coat is less susceptible to damage and is more protective to the dog. In developing the Terriers, breeders crossed ancient Dachshunds, the English Hound, and later the Fox Hound and Beagle. The Fox Terrier can be a very aggressive breed for its size and has been known to initiate fights with other dogs and animals.
