Though the breed came in a variety of colors, white was preferred. In 1913, an orange dog appeared in a show ring and became a champion, which resulted in a craze over orange and orange sable dogs in a few years. The breed is now used mainly as a companion, watchdog, and a show dog.

The breed is the smallest member of the Nordic breeds family and is believed to have originated from sled dogs. They became popular in Germany and were introduced later to Great Britain where found many fanciers due to great love of Queen Victoria.
