The Kennel Club of England recognized the breed in 1870 while breed clubs started their promotion. The Poms of the 1800s were shown in two sizes – dogs under 8 pounds and those over. Nowadays, the Pom should weigh between 3 to 7 pounds as written in the official breed standard.

Breed fanciers are sure to know that the ancestors of the Pom come from northern regions and were used there as sled dogs a few centuries ago. Later, they became common in Germany where breeders diminished the size of the breed. Once they got to Great Britain, their popularity rocketed.
