Willoughby dogs featured so called ‘smutty-fawn’ or ‘stone-fawn’ coats, and this color was defined by the mix of fawn and black hairs. Morrison dogs, in contrast to their Willoughby counterparts, came in apricot-fawn, and they were stockier and chubbier than Willoughby dogs.

This breed arrived in Holland in the late 1500s, and it was not until the 1800s that a certain standard was drafted. In the 19th century, there were two distinct varieties of the breed: the Willoughby and the Morrison; they featured different colors and constitutions.
