Many members of royal families of Holland, French and other countries liked this breed. Such dogs lived in Tibetan monasteries, Japan and practically all over the world. The AKC registered this breed in 1885; all other associations also recognize it.

The other names of the breed are Carlin and Mops. It is one of the oldest breeds; it originated about 2500 years ago in Asia, but the true origin of these dogs is still unknown.
