The Rhodesian Ridgeback is native to South Africa and they date back to the early 16th century. This breed has a unique feature where the hair on its spine is turned forward. The only other known dog that has the peculiarity of such a ridge is found on the island of Phu Quoc in the Gulf of Siam. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is an excellent hunter and has more recently been utilized as a watch dog.
