There are two breed varieties – German and American – varying in working abilities. Prior to purchasing a pet, decide what kind of a pet you need. American variety is bred for reliability and obedience, while German dogs are used mostly for work. Nowadays, this breed is recognized by most registries: the AKC, FCI, CKC, UKC, KCGB, CKC, ANKC, NKC, and NZKC. The AKC recognizes this breed in the Working Group. Other registries recognize it as the Utility or Non-Sporting breed.
