The breed is said to have origined from the mastiff-type dogs that used to accompany the Roman Legions across the Alps herding their cattle and guarding their camps. The breed originated in the town of Rottweil located on the banks of the Neckar River in southern Germany. In the mid-1800's, the cattle trade flourished in Rottweil and the dogs were also called butcher dogs. The dogs were used to drive the cattle to market and returned with the filled purses of their masters around their necks. In the 20th century, the breed was on the verge of extinction.
