This breed is hardy and healthy, but some bloodlines are prone to a number of serious disorders. Hip or elbow dysplasia is one of the main problems in most large breeds. It’s a genetic disorder, which may also be influenced by environmental factors. It causes serious pain and can even lead to lameness. Difficulty in detecting the disorder at early stages makes the problem worse. There is no effective treatment for this disorder, except surgery, but it can be prevented by screening the breeding stock prior to mating.
