The progenitors of the modern breed traveled with the Roman conquerors, driving and protecting cattle that fed the warriors and participating in war campaigns. On the territory of modern Germany, these war dogs crossbred with local canines, which resulted in strong, endurable and protective animals ideally suited to local living conditions. German cattlemen used descendants of the Roman dogs to bring the herds to the butcher, pull carts and to guard their purses of money. Those draft dogs were larger than the modern dogs.

The dogs are 24 inches to 27 inches high and bitches are 22 inches to 25 inches high. You can easily tell a dog from a bitch by its appearance. The correct proportion is of primary importance, as long as size is within the standard's range. The length of the body is slightly longer than the height of the dog at the withers. Thus the most desirable height to length proportion of the dog is of 9 to 10; the dog’s coat is neither coarse nor shelly. The coloring of the coat is black with brown markings.
